1972 911 RS 993 3.6L DME G50 SBH Transmission Conversion Restoration
Posted by PATRICK MOTORSPORTS on
This 1972 911 was a wreck when it showed up on a trailer towed in from San Diego. The customer wanted to have a car with super performance, and the comfort of A/C. The 1995 Porsche 993 3.6L engine was selected for installation in this project car.
To fit this engine in this older Porsche 911 chassis, several modifications are required, the dash and power brake sheet metal work was the most intensive (see detail in photos). We have installed the wide variety of our special 3.6L DME engine conversion parts.
For this project we installed the Porsche G50 transmission converted to SBH (short bell housing) configuration. This modification required our specially fabricated transmission mount with other conversion specific parts and hardware. The clutch system is the 240mm Centerforce DF255255 which offers a high clamp-load with minimal increase in pedal effort. The flywheel is our 9.5Lb CNC machined billet chromoly steel unit which features all of the necessary timing reference features for the 3.6L DME engine coupled to the SBH G50.
Because the car will utilize the 993 type air conditioning system, we cut and removed the older style 911 dash support. We then grafted in the new type 993 dash which has the updated air ventilation features.
The seats chosen are Corbeau XL Sport version which required specialty milled brackets. We then ordered and installed all new interior leather and lining materials.

Check out the 356 style gauges, these are all LED converted, and the Tach is fitted with a built in programable shift light !
For this project we used the Porsche G50 transmission from the 1987-1989 Porsche 911 cars. For the G50 transmission to fit in the chassis, it was first converted to short bell housing configuration. Because this is an earlier chassis, it was necessary to clear the torsion tube assembly and use our adjustable transmission mount. The power plant is the larger displacement 3.6L engine from the 1995 Porsche 993 cars. All the engine and transmission conversion parts are pre-fitted and installed for an easy installation into the car.

Fuel Safe 17 Gallon Remote Fill Fuel Cell Tank For Porsche 911 / 930 (FUE SA100 R)
Fuel Safe offers the best and most cost effective fuel cell systems for both street and race cars. The original tank was in no condition to be reinstalled into the car. Also notice we updated to the hydraulic reservoir system for the new G50 pedal and clutch assembly.
This shows the strut brace installed. This brace is a must for any 911 as the towers will flex under hard cornering.
Also shows the fuel cell completed. When a fuel cell is wanted or required there is no finer choice than a fuel safe fuel cell. They are used and approved by all sanctioning bodies in every racing application from off road to Indy. If you are looking for a fuel cell, fuel safe should be your first and only choice!
This also shows the twin oil coolers with Goodridge fittings and stainless steel hoses with fire sleeve for safety and added protection.
We used torsion bars with adjustable spring plates. These allow you to adjust the ride height with out disassembling the rear suspension. You can also fine tune the suspension when you corner balance the car on the scales.
