1978 930 Turbo to Group B RS / RSR Race car

This 1978 Porsche 911 Turbo (930) was originally prepared for street use, but has now been converted for export to Europe for racing use in the United Kingdom in a resurrection of the famed Groupe B FIA class.

The project features extensive engine tuning. We changed out cams, light head work, valve relief piston tops, huge intercooler, stainless headers, KKK turbo, and a few other little tricks to get a super efficient power band.

We race prepped the transaxle with close ratio gears, Quaife differential, and trans. cooling system. We cut the roof to lose the weight & build the FIA spec. safety cage system, the roof got re-skinned in FRG, and we added the RSR type front & rear bumpers to save some weight & and allow us to run the dual front oil cooler system.

The car is fitted with a FUELSAFE 27gal. SA101 fuel cell. The suspension has been set up for track, see the photos of us running it at the PCA Zone 8 SpeedFest April 2008.

1978 930 TURBO GROUP B RS / RSR RACE CAR front oil cooler

Pictured here is the Setrab front oil cooler, "500 competition" Setrab nose mount oil cooler. It weighs 7 lbs. and the OAL is 23.5" the cooling core area is 20" x 5.25" x 2.75" we use this cooler on all our high performance & full race 914, 911, & 930 turbo projects. The Setrab oil coolers are one of the finest made, they are lightweight and this means they cool better! They dissipate oil temperature better than most common oil coolers. this cooler is set up with 3/4" NPT fittings Qty 2) on each end, the fittings shown are not included. We are also a full line Goodridge distributor, ask for the plumbing hardware for your application and see it in use on many cars in the project section on our site. Adding an extra oil cooler to your Porsche will increase performance and lengthen the service life of your engine. This is a small investment for a huge piece of mind. Please call for quotes on all our other systems. Patrick Motorsports exclusive. We are a full line Setrab distributor.

1978 930 TURBO GROUP B RS / RSR RACE CAR front oil cooler shroud

This picture shows the shroud needed behind the front oil cooler, because of the fuel tank location there is not much room left for the front oil cooler that is the reason it is mounted between the body and bumper we use the Setrab, "500 competition" nose mount oil cooler.

1978 930 Turbo Group B RS / RSR Race Car roof skin bonded

This picture shows the light weight composite top skin installed on our project. As you can see when installed properly you cannot tell this has been replaced.

With the top skin removed it is much easier to install and properly weld the roll bar assembly.

You can also see the wevo short shifter has been installed in this car also. This will reduce the lever travel by 30%. It also has lateral springs to aid in upshifting and help make accidental downshift less likely to happen. This unit is a direct replacement for the stock shifter. part number tra wevo-g50 shifter.

Also we have a few needed extras in place of the radio. to the left is the switch to activate the safecraft fire system. This car has the 10 lb aluminum fire bottle mounted in the rear seat area. This comes with the cable pull three nozzles and aluminum tubing for the spray nozzles.

next to that is a transmission oil temperature gauge to monitor the fluid temps. in the trans. The last gauge is the intercooler temperature efficiency gauge. This is a great tool to help you understand & monitor your intercooler. see when it’s cooling and when it's heat soaked. We stock them in fahrenheit but can be ordered in celsius. This gauge indicates inlet charge air temperatures along with outlet temperatures, then calculates the temp split for you and shows the cooling efficiency.

When the split is high, turn up the boost, when it is low it’s time to ease up and save your motor. This kit includes the gauge, two thermocouples and wiring harness. part number ele dav 1017-308fd

April 2008 PCA Event: California Festival of Speed in Fontana.
This 1978 Porsche 911 Turbo project was just completed and in need of a test flight shakedown!  The engine was just rebuilt and the boost was set at the modest 1.05 bar. The G50 Short Bell Housing transaxle was also just prepared for RSR use. Piloting is James Patrick with our good customer and friend Francis Stafilopatis co-pilot. As you can see the car is well balanced for track use and will ultimately be shipped back to the United Kingdom for FIA racing circuits.

This picture shows the Porsche G50 Transaxle converted to Short Bell Housing Configuration - RSR Spec with our Exclusive Billet Side Cover for the G50 type trans axles found in the 1987-1998 Porsche 911 manufactured from T-6061 Billet Aluminum includes new engine to transmission case stud set.

This part reduces ring gear deflection and adds rigidity to the case. Recommended for all applications and rebuilds. Must do for limited slip or torque biasing differential applications. The stock side cover was never designed to handle the increased horse power and torque we are all looking for from todays engines this is the weak link.

With a Quaife ATB Differential. The Quaife is great for street driving or racing. Racers don't have to put up with locking mechanisms or spools that created unwanted understeer under power, or in the case of front-drive cars, even tear the steering wheel out of their hands when cornering. Because it behaves like an open differential during ordinary driving, street drivers will have trouble telling it's there until pushing the car's limits.
The Quaife has been proven in everything from SCCA Rally to Formula 1. It provides autocrossers with such an advantage, it has become "required" equipment for a winning effort.
