Rothmans BSR - 986 Boxster Spec Race Car Build
Posted by PATRICK MOTORSPORTS on
Just completed is this turn key 1999 Porsche Boxster Spec Racer.
Patrick Motorsports race cars start as low mileage, clean accident free 1998-1999 base model Boxsters. Each car goes through a thorough inspection to guarantee the car meets PMS’s exceedingly high standards.
Driver Accessories
PMS BSR program includes driver comfort equipment like the Cool Shirt system. With this system the driver will be in control of the temperature inside the driving suit which will lead to better concentration and sustainability. We install a 14” convex rear view mirror for better visibility and keep the electric controlled side mirrors. The shifter is raised up and shift throws are shortened so minimal time is spent with the drivers hand off the wheel. All controls are easily within reach and visibility is kept high to allow the driver full situational awareness.
Battery and Electrical Safety Systems
Each BSR comes standard with a lightweight Odyssey battery and PMS battery mount. For safety PMS exclusive dual zone battery disconnect switches have been installed for the driver and safety workers. We also relocated the alarm control unit away from water and debris on the floor. This also adds room to further lower the driver seat. We also remove all unnecessary wiring from under the dash and relocate the headlight switch.
Body & Chassis Components
PMS factory trained technicians disassemble the Boxster to a bare shell. Our fabricators then fit in a full safety cage system that meets all BSR/SPBOX rules. PMS exclusive weld in floor pan modifications allow the seat to be lower to give the drive more head room. The convertible top cover is fixed closed and then modified to accept a lightweight fiberglass top and LEXAN rear window using PMS exclusive brackets and fasteners. The dash caps and center dash plate are highly modified and hand crafted out of aluminium, and then powder coated. Both front and rear bumper are modified for center ventilation, exhaust outlet and retractable tow hooks. Our exclusive mesh grills front and rear are installed allowing for maximum airflow while offering protection for the center front mount radiator from road debris. Door cards are removed and doors are stripped to a shell to allow more space for the six point roll cage. Custom door caps are installed to add rigidity back into the doors. All dents and paint defects are repaired by our in-house body shop. Every car receives a new front windshield and 3M clear bra installed on the front bumper and leading edges. In addition we offer custom vinyl graphics and decal service to give your car a personal touch.
Brakes & Suspension System
PMS technicians disassemble the entire brake and suspension system from the chassis. All components that are not up to spec are replaced. Each wheel carrier is stripped, cleaned, inspected and receives a new wheel bearing. We convert the car to long wheel studs and steel nuts for safety and for efficient tire changes. Then exclusive PMS gas slotted rotors are installed. PMS has worked with Hawk Brakes to develop a pad compound specifically for the BSR. New stainless steel brake lines are installed and bleed with ATE Blue brake fluid. The BSR suspension starts with Bilstein PSS9 coilover suspension system and our own custom Swift springs. Monoball rear toe arms are installed, removing slop found in the factory suspension. This setup allows for precise changes in the compression and rebound of the suspension and ride height adjustment. Our technicians then install GT3 lower control arms and shims for increased camber. GT3 front and rear sway bars, adjustable drop links and new bushings are installed to complete the suspension system. Our technicians then corner balance and align the car with the best overall track setup, developed over years of race victories and lap records. Our BSR racecar weights 2,453 pounds with half a tank of gas and all fluids. We also “shake down” the cars before delivery sto assure that the car is ready to win the first time out.
Clutch & Flywheel
For better throttle response we install a billet lightweight flywheel, OEM clutch disk and lightweight pressure plate. A new throw out bearing and all new hardware is installed. We balance the whole assembly to .10 of an ounce on our in-house state of the art computer balancing equipment.
Electrical Equipment & Additional Gauges
With the latest AiM dash, all important measurements are clearly displayed for the driver. Water temp, oil temp and oil pressure. Extra data points can be added and all data can be logged from added gauges and OBDII port, allowing you to improve on previous events where improvements can be made.
Engine Components & Service
We only start with the lowest mile, best cared for cars with extensive service history. Our factory trained technicians remove the engine and replace the spark plugs (NKG Racing), spark plug tubes, water pump, engine oil cooler, update intermediate flange with seal, rear main seal, oil separator bellows idler bearings, thermostat, center radiator and other engine components and gaskets. We also install an exclusive underdrive pulley. This slows down the power steering pump but also adds power by reducing parasitic drag. We remove unnecessary engine components like the air pump and air conditioning system. Our technicians also install a new set of O2 sensors to make sure the engine is running at its full potential. To eliminate oil starvation in hard cornering, we install a “cup” style oil sump plate and pressurized Accusump system. Custom cat bypass pipes and high flow dyno tested mufflers are installed helping the engine breath better. With this system the vehicle should pass a large majority of noise restrictions but angled track pipes can be added to ensure noise compliance. To keep the temperatures down, our triple radiator set-up is installed.
After the engine is installed we fill the oil system with Mobile 1 fully synthetic motor oil. The transmission is changed to Redline gear oil that keeps temps down and reduces drivetrain loss. We use Redline water wetter in the cooling system and flush the power steering system with ATE Pentosin.
Interior & Safety Equipment
PMS number one priority is engineering the BSR racecar for safety. The six point PMS custom fabricated DOM tubing is the safest cage to be fitted in the the BSR rules. We pad all the exposed bars and install window nets for added safety. Each car comes with a Recaro Pro HANS racing seat in blrack velour. HANS, head and neck support is paramount to the safety of the driver in the event of an accident and has saved the lives of many racecar drivers. A Schroth 6 point harness is fitted that can be removed by the driver with just the twist of the dial. We can also install a passenger seat and equipment for an extra charge. To aid with drive safety and comfort a Spacro quick release hub and MOMO cup car MOD 7 deep dish steering wheel is installed. A 10 LBS Halon 3 zone 360 degree custom installed fire system is included with the BSR.
As you can see there is a lot of labor to create this caliber product and on average it takes 155 hours of service labor, 48 hours of body shop labor and 78 hours of fabrication labor. This process results in a complete transformation from a street car to a full out race ready machine.
